Bathroom Furniture Facades: Moisture Resistance Guide

The bathroom is the most aggressive environment for furniture due to the combination of humidity, steam, splashes, and temperature changes. Choosing the wrong facades results in swelling, delamination, and premature deterioration.

Why the Bathroom Is Different from the Kitchen

Although both share moisture, the bathroom presents unique challenges: constant steam from showers, direct water splashes, prolonged ambient humidity, and variable temperatures.

Suitable Materials for Bathrooms

PVC Thermoformed

The most moisture-resistant. PVC facades are a sheet of PVC molded over MDF board through heat and vacuum. 100% waterproof surface, no exposed joints or edges, wide variety of colors. Medium-high price.

Sealed Lacquered MDF

Lacquered MDF can work in bathrooms with proper sealing: polyurethane perimeter seal, 2-component PU lacquer (more water-resistant than standard), minimum 3 coats on all faces. Premium finish, any color, but high cost and vulnerable if seal is damaged.

Moisture-Resistant Melamine (Green Board)

Particleboard with hydrophobic additives. Identified by green-colored core. Resists prolonged ambient humidity but not immersion. Edges must be 2mm ABS with PUR adhesive.

Materials to Avoid

  • Standard particleboard: absorbs water like a sponge

  • Unsealed MDF: absorbs moisture and warps

  • Melamine with thin edge banding (0.4mm): edges peel in humidity

  • Untreated solid wood: warps and cracks

Common Mistakes

  • Using the same material as kitchen without adaptation

  • Not raising furniture off the floor (must be wall-hung or on 10cm+ legs)

  • Ignoring ventilation (ensure adequate window or extractor)

  • Exposed edges (use 2mm ABS with PUR adhesive)

Recommendation

For bathrooms with showers: PVC thermoformed or PU-sealed lacquered MDF. For powder rooms (sink only): green board melamine with 2mm ABS edges is sufficient.
